Powering Dreams: Highlights from the NAWBO National Women’s Business Conference 2023

By Jennifer Masi // CEO

What happens when 600 women business owners gather in one room?
Inspiration, connection, and a world of possibilities (and yes, fun).

As a woman-owned business, Torque is passionate about serving women entrepreneurs. We believe that the NAWBO National Women's Business Conference 2023 is particularly relevant in this era of post-COVID and current economic challenges, where the business world needs a different approach.

In Austin, Texas, women from across the globe came together to share their stories, learn from each other, and celebrate their successes. Here's a deep dive into the lessons, laughs, and leadership experienced at the event.

The Power of Numbers

These stats speak volumes:

  • A whopping 74% of male-owned businesses seek capital, compared to only 27% of female-owned businesses.

  • Strikingly, only 1% of female business owners ever sell their enterprise. Such stats set the stage for discussions on bridging this gap and amplifying women's voices in the business realm.

Workshops That Resonated

The “Scaling: Building Systems to Accelerate Your Growth” workshop by Casey Clark, CEO and Co-Founder of Cultivate Advisors, was insightful.

Key takeaways:

  • The path to scaling involves creating a business that thrives without total owner dependency.

  • A shared vision is paramount; it should resonate with the entire team, going beyond just the owner's aspirations.

  • Allow your team to chart the path; as a leader, set the destination.

  • Accept that a portion of your business will always face challenges, but simplicity in execution is key.

Pearls Of Wisdom From Key Speakers

Casey Clark emphasized that “cool kids know their numbers” and reminded us that “learners are earners.” Dr. Martha Beck introduced the beautiful concept of “glimmers” - those moments of light and joy amidst daily challenges. She affirmed, “I am meant to live in peace and joy.” Rebecca Conteras passionately shared her journey of forging her own path encouraging attendees to “set audacious goals, really put yourself out there in uncomfortable situations, and see how you emerge.”

The NAWBO Spirit

The core values of NAWBO spell out 'HISTORIC', emphasizing Humility, Integrity, Servant leadership, Teamwork, Open-mindedness, Reliability, Inspiration, Community, and Leadership in a world of change. The focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging was evident throughout the conference.

Stories of Triumph

Listening to entrepreneur Mei Xu narrate her journey, from starting Chesapeake Bay Candle to pivoting during health setbacks, was nothing short of inspiring. Dr. Martha Beck’s insights on exchanging anxiety for creativity struck a chord with many.

Workshop Insights

From understanding the significance of certification for women-owned businesses, putting profit first, to increasing sales close rates - the workshops were filled with actionable insights. However, amidst the digital age, the charm of a printed business card still stood out!

Celebrating Milestones

The “Boots and Bling” party was a highlight! But beyond the fun, there was a serious nod to history. HR 5050, the Women's Business Ownership Act of 1988, was a testament to NAWBO's advocacy. This legislation marked a significant win, ensuring women business owners could sign their loan documents without needing a male co-signer.

The Challenges and Triumphs During COVID

The pandemic posed unique challenges for women in business. Many faced hurdles accessing funds, with biases and a lack of established bank relationships. However, the adaptability and resilience demonstrated by female entrepreneurs during this period were commendable.

Conclusion

As the sun set on the NAWBO National Women’s Business Conference 2023, attendees left inspired, informed, and interconnected. With 1,800 new women-led businesses emerging every day, the future is bright and full of dreams ready to be powered.

The conference, much like its attendees, reiterated a powerful message: Women in business are not just dreamers; they are doers, innovators, and trailblazers.
