Chicago Life Science Spotlight: Prysm Institute
Launched in 2020, The Prysm Institute is a bright light for Chicago innovation. Simply put, it is a virtual accelerator for healthcare, life science, and technology companies, from small start-ups to established companies.
Led by Dr. James Gillespie and run in partnership with real estate development firm Sterling Bay, the Prysm Institute embodies a wide spectrum of resources, potential and ideals.
Aptly, Prysm is named for the array of business categories it supports, including life science, healthcare and technology.
‘Prysm’ is also a reference to the broad range of founder diversity, including owner-entrepreneurs who are women, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx-American, LGBTQ+ and military veterans.
The Institute wisely takes advantage of a ‘Prysm’ of financial partners and experienced mentors to support the growth potential of its startups and growth companies. Not just for passive investors, this is a very hands-on model, called Leaders-In-Residence, and including three categories of advisors and mentors: Entrepreneurs-In-Residence, Executives-In-Residence, and Investors-In-Residence. These are best-in-class leaders from the biotechnology, device, healthcare, medicine, pharmaceutical, and technology sectors from around the world.
Lastly the concept of a Prysm refers to access to the rich and wide-ranging resources in Chicago and throughout the midwest, including world-class universities, business centers, healthcare facilities and much more.
We’re excited to see how Prysm will focus the capabilities, talent and resources of Chicago to become a world leading healthcare cluster and vibrant business innovation center.
